Random Loot

Enemy kills can drop gear with rolled prefixes, suffixes, and quality. Most is ordinary. Once in a while, the corpse holds something worth rebuilding a character around.

How a drop happens (ROT 1.5b1 & Distorted Illusions)

  • Every enemy kill has a 5% chance to leave a random item in the corpse.
  • Of those drops, 2% are uniques available only from high-level enemies. 22% are magical; the rest are plain base items.
  • Magical items receive a prefix, a suffix, or both, with equal odds. ROT 1.5b1 has 90 prefixes and 119 suffixes; DI has 130 suffixes. Each affix has its own level, alignment, stat bonuses, and possible resistances.
  • A separate quality roll makes 15% Exceptional, with stronger stats, and 15% Cracked, with weaker ones.
  • Strongly aligned affixes make items anti-good, anti-evil, or anti-neutral. Even the loot judges you.
  • Affix power follows the fallen enemy's level, so the best names drop from things that can probably kill you.

Seven grades in v3.1

  • 20% of enemy kills drop a generated item, four times the old rate.
  • Seven colour-coded quality grades: broken (5%), dented (15%), scratched (35%), normal (30%), improved (10%), exceptional (4%), flawless (1%).
  • Better quality means more affixes. Their strength follows the enemy's level, varies slightly from item to item, and rises in higher-tier areas.
  • Uniques start at a 2% chance, climbing to 5% against the very highest-level enemies.
  • Quality touches everything. Broken gear has penalties, flawless gear is 80% burn-proof, exceptional or better gear cannot be sacrificed, and random items cannot be restrung.
  • Random drops have their own achievement line. Finding 5,000 over a character's lifetime pays 2,000 experience.

Claiming what's yours

The loot system pairs with an ownership ritual: buy a Blood Stone from the quest shop (level 101, 500 qp in ROT 1.5b1) and emblazon an item to mark it permanently yours. In Distorted Illusions, the stone can be found in the world. Item ownership is unavailable in v3.1.
